Privacy
What we measure
No cookies. No accounts. No advertising trackers. No personal data. This page explains exactly what is collected and why, in the same plain English as everything else here.
Analytics
This site uses Umami, a privacy-focused analytics tool, served from our own domain. It records that a page was viewed and how people interact with the page, not who they are.
What it collects:
- The page you viewed, and the page that referred you to it
- Your country (and sometimes region or city)
- Your browser, operating system, device type and screen size
- Your browser's language setting
- Anonymous interaction events such as a quiz answered, a term expanded, how far down a page you scrolled
What it does not collect:
- Your IP address. It is used momentarily to work out your country and to generate an anonymous identifier, then discarded, never written to storage.
- Cookies, or anything else stored on your device by the analytics tool.
- Your name, email address, or any other identifying information.
- Anything you type. Contact form field names are recorded when validation fails; the values you entered never are.
Why we can't identify you
Visitors are counted using a hash built from your IP address and browser details, combined with a secret that is regenerated every day. The next day, the same person on the same device produces a completely different identifier.
That is a deliberate trade. It means we genuinely cannot follow anyone across days, across devices, or across websites, and it also means we cannot tell you how many of our readers are returning ones. We think that is the right way round.
Umami also respects your browser's Do Not Track setting. If you have it enabled, nothing is recorded at all.
What your browser stores
A few conveniences are saved in your browser's localStorage. This never leaves your device and is never sent to us:
- Your theme choice (system, light or dark)
- Which articles you've marked as read
- Your quiz answers
- How far you scrolled through an article
Clearing your browser's site data removes all of it. Nothing breaks if you do.
Article likes and view counts
Both are plain counters: a single number per article, stored on Cloudflare. There is no record of who liked what. Your browser remembers thatyou liked something so the button stays filled in; that memory is local to your device.
The contact form
What you send reaches contact@techdecoded.dev by email and nowhere else. Your address is used to reply to you. It is not added to a mailing list, and it is not shared or sold. There is no mailing list.
Hosting
The site runs on Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes request data to serve pages and block attacks. SeeCloudflare's privacy policy.
